Ohio Gov Kasich response to diversity question: “I don’t need your people”

(Examiner.com) In less than a month on the job, Ohio’s new Republican Gov., John Kasich, has wasted no time creating the excitement he said he would.

“I don’t need your people”

Kasich’s campaign promise to create jobs in Ohio by creating JobsOhio, the privatized economic development arm of the Ohio Dept. of Development, is proceeding swiftly and famously, courtesy of the Ohio legislature.

The excitement percolating in the wake of Kasich saying “I don’t need your people” to answer a question from a Black Ohio State Senator about why his cabinet members have been all white so far (23 of 24), is unfortunately attracting the wrong kind of attention at a time when the new governor needs all the team members and teamwork he can muster, if Ohio is to reclaim any portion of the jobs and prosperity it lost over the last ten years.

OLBC’s Weddington asks for Kasich hiring records

Driving off of Kasich’s unforced error, the Ohio Legislative Black Caucus (OLBC) convened the media at the Statehouse last week to sharply criticize the hiring practices of both the governor and the GOP-controlled Ohio House and Senate. The partisan dust-up over the semantics and intention in those five words has escalated to national cable shows, and now prompted another Black legislator to kick it up a notch by filing a public records request to determine the level of diversity among Kasich’s top hires.
