White student union members refuse to apologize for advocating racial segregation and slavery at university conservative conference

(Daily Mail) Two members of the White Student Union at Towson University in Maryland are refusing to apologize after advocating for racial segregation and defending slavery during the school’s Conservative Political Action Conference on Friday.

The two student group members, Scott Terry and Matthew Heimbach, took their incendiary stances while Carl Smith of Frederick Douglass Republicans was delivering a presentation at the university event about how Republicans could reach minorities more effectively. 

In the midst of Smith’s presentation, Terry began challenging him about the inclusion of blacks in the Republican Party.

The White Student Suing to Overthrow Affirmative Action Was Too Dumb to Get Into Her Chosen College

(Gawker.com) Life is tough for white people in America. A few hundred years of presumed superiority have left many of them psychologically unable to deal with failure, trapped in a cycle of victimhood where their own shortcomings can only be understood as evidence of persecution against them. So we have Abigail Fisher, 23 years old, and the plaintiff in Fisher v. University of Texas, which is currently being weighed by the Supreme Court.

Fisher, who is white, is suing the university because—well, because the full-time crusaders against affirmative action asked her to. But her ostensible complaint is that she applied to go to the University of Texas at Austin but didn't get in, while some students who are not white did get in, under the university's system of weighing "personal circumstances," including poverty and race, in some of its admissions. Ergo, under the logic of anti-reverse racism, some undeserving minority student took her spot.

But this week, Pro Publica published a look into the actual circumstances surrounding University of Texas admissions when Fisher applied. And that the reason Fisher didn't get in was that she wasn't qualified.

African American teen invited to ‘KKK’ birthday party, mom says

(ABC News) A black student at a Texas junior high school was the victim of routine racial taunts and bullying, including his receiving a fake invitation to a KKK birthday party to be held in his honor, his mother says.

Justin Howard, a seventh-grader at Tomball Junior High School in Tomball, Texas, has been harassed by a group of white students who bullied him because he is black, according to his mother, Tahiyyah Howard.

"I'm just, really, you know, sick of it," Howard told ABC News affiliate KTRK-TV. "A girl wrote on the board 'Black Justin' and my son was really upset."

The most egregious example, the boy's mother said, came when Justin received a fake birthday party invitation from two classmates with a Ku Klux Klan theme. It is unclear about how the boy became aware of the note.

"[They] put it on his desk and said that he was invited to a KKK birthday party with lots of fun and games," said Howard, who has not sought action outside the school.

Oberlin College cancels classes to address racial incidents

(CNN) – Oberlin College in Ohio suspended classes Monday after a student reported seeing a person resembling a Ku Klux Klan member near the college's Afrikan Heritage House.

The sighting of the person wearing a white hood and robe was reported early Monday morning and follows a string of recent hate incidents on Oberlin's campus that have ignited shock and confusion among the student body.

"Since the beginning, there's been anger, frustration, sadness and fear, but we've been working toward a concentrated effort toward change," said Eliza Diop, 20, a politics and Africana Studies major who serves on the college student senate and is a resident of the Afrikan Heritage House, which offers programs focused on the African diaspora, according to the college's website.

Oberlin College is a small liberal arts college in Oberlin, Ohio, with almost 3,000 students. An emergency meeting among the college's officials was immediately called after the report.

More Minorities in Class? Less in Teacher’s Paycheck

(Hispanic Business) Across the country the pattern recurs: Teachers working with high-minority populations take a hit in the paycheck. U.S. Department of Education data from 2010 shows elementary school teachers who worked in schools with the highest African-American and Hispanic enrollment earned an average $2,251 less per year than teachers in the same district with the fewest minority students. 

At the high school level, the largest pay gap in 2012 was found in the Philadelphia School District, where teachers with the highest African-American and Hispanic populations were paid $14,699 less than teachers in schools with the fewest minorities.

HOW ONE YEAR AT A BLACK COLLEGE SHAPED A COACH’S LIFE FOREVER

(SB Nation) Waiting for competition to resume at a regional track meet in Churubusco, Ind., last spring, the 15-year-old didn’t look much different from other teenagers on coach James Reed’s North Miami High School (Ind.) team. The boy was perhaps a year or two younger than the rest. His stocky, athletic build and longish blond hair distinguished him a tad from everybody else, and maybe – just maybe — how he viewed the world was misaligned with theirs, too.

Huddled with teammates between events, the 15-year-old noticed black girls and boys, jeans sagging off their asses, milling around. As if out of nowhere, he blurted out, "I don't really not like black people. But I just don't like black people when they're sagging, when they've got their hat on backwards."

Stunned, Reed grabbed the boy and hustled him a few feet from the pack. "Why'd you say that?" Reed demanded. "Why?"

The 15-year-old stood mute. But what words do speak to ignorance, which is what racist rhetoric is? Reed knew, however, that the boy wasn't the only person in his high school of 500 students — or in his town or any similar place in rural America where the sight of black faces was rare — who embraced such myopic beliefs. In rural schools like North Miami, many teenagers look at sagging jeans as a clownish fad – same, too, with rap music. They find the profanity-laced lyrics of Trinidad James, 2 Chainz and Rick Ross impossible to dissect to their essence because the black rappers focus too much on baby-momma drama, on living the gangsta lifestyle, on making coin:

National fraternity suspends Duke chapter behind anti-Asian ‘racist rager’ party

(NBC News) The Duke University fraternity that threw a "racist rager" party last week featuring racial stereotypes of Asians has been suspended by its national headquarters.

 

 

The national office of Kappa Sigma said in a statement Wednesday that it was investigating last Friday's party for possible conduct unbecoming a chapter. It told its chapter in Durham, N.C., to shut down all activities pending completion of the investigation and a decision on punishment.

In a message to Kappa Sigma members nationwide, Christian Nascimento, the fraternity's "worthy grand master," wrote Thursday:

The Kappa Sigma Fraternity is a diverse group of men, with members from all walks of life. We celebrate this diversity, as it is one of the things that makes our Order so strong. The actions taken in association with the event in question are inconsistent with our values. I personally condemn that type of behavior.

Minority Students Have More Stable Grades Despite Working Longer Hours

(Huffington Post) African American and Hispanic students are more likely to work longer hours when holding a job while attending school, compared to non-Hispanic white students with a job.

According to research from Jerald Bachman, Ph.D., of the University of Michigan, however, minority students have more stable grades compared to non-Hispanic whites and Asian Americans working the same hours.

“We know from previous research that for most students, working more than 15 hours a week is associated with various problems, including lower grades andsubstance use,” Bachman said to Psych Central. “However, what we’re finding withthis new research is that this pattern does not seem to appear among some minority students, particularly those who come from a less advantaged background.” The study observed more than 600,000 students from public and private schools across the country, between the years 1991 and 2010.

Is the Ivy League Fair to Asian Americans?

(The Atlantic) Are Ivy League institutions discriminating against Asian Americans by limiting how many are admitted? That's the subject of a debate published this week in the New York Times. Let's start with the folks who believe that there's effectively a race-based quota limiting Asian Americans.

Ron Unz makes the most powerful argument for that proposition. "After the Justice Department closed an investigation in the early 1990s into charges that Harvard University discriminated against Asian-American applicants, Harvard's reported enrollment of Asian-Americans began gradually declining, falling from 20.6 percent in 1993 to about 16.5 percent over most of the last decade," he writes. "This decline might seem small. But these same years brought a huge increase in America's college-age Asian population, which roughly doubled between 1992 and 2011, while non-Hispanic white numbers remained almost unchanged. Thus, according to official statistics, the percentage of Asian-Americans enrolled at Harvard fell by more than 50 percent over the last two decades, while the percentage of whites changed little. This decline in relative Asian-American enrollment was actually larger than the impact of Harvard's 1925 Jewish quota, which reduced Jewish freshmen from 27.6 percent to 15 percent."

African American teacher sues Philly prep school over firing

(NBC News) A math teacher at an exclusive Philadelphia prep school claims in a racial-discrimination suit that he was fired without cause after school officials alleged he sent inappropriate text messages to a female student. 

Attorneys for Arthur “Chuck” Matthews said the veteran teacher, who is black, was fired even though the young woman and her parents said the messages contained nothing improper. 

The federal lawsuit alleges that Matthews’ termination from Springside Chestnut Hill Academy was part of a pattern of discrimination at the “predominantly Caucasian” school, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported

“Historically, black employees, regardless of their position, have been denied promotions and are subject to harsher discipline, unfair demotion, and unjust termination in circumstances where nonblack staff are, or have been, treated more favorably,” the lawsuit said.
