Racist Graffiti At Agoura High School Included Hit List Of African American Students

Friday, May 17th, 2013

(Huffington Post) In an area known as one of the safest communities in the country, a hit list of African American students who would be "the first to die" was spray-painted in a high school bathroom.

The racist graffiti was at Agoura High School in Agoura Hills, Calif., a predominantly white community about 35 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles. The hit list is believed to have been painted during school hours Wednesday, KTLA reports in the video above.

Before that, graffiti reading "Go back 2 Africa" was found and removed off of the school walls on Sunday.

The hate crime made some parents wonder if it was safe for students to go to school, even though extra patrols will be there all week. “Does (my son) have to watch his back when he’s coming to school?” a parent asked CBS.

“(The suspects) win if our kids don’t come to school … they think they’re scared, they’re afraid," another parent said to the station.

In the video above, KTLA interviews parents whose children were on the hit list — many of whom went to campus immediately after hearing about the graffiti on Wednesday.

Are victims falling through America’s hate crime data gap?

Tuesday, March 19th, 2013

(CNN) – Two hit-and-run deaths in rural Mississippi just a few miles apart highlight a disturbing problem about data collection on possible hate crimes.

Last summer, 61-year-old African-American Sunday school teacher Johnny Lee Butts was hit and killed by an 18-year-old white driver. The teen told Panola County Sheriff deputies he thought he hit a deer but the driver's two passengers said he steered straight for Butts. One passenger said he could see that Butts was black. The killing has sparked outrage in the local African-American community. Civil rights groups have demanded that police prosecute Butts' killing as a hate crime.

Nonetheless, prosecutors chose not to.

African American teen invited to ‘KKK’ birthday party, mom says

Saturday, March 9th, 2013

(ABC News) A black student at a Texas junior high school was the victim of routine racial taunts and bullying, including his receiving a fake invitation to a KKK birthday party to be held in his honor, his mother says.

Justin Howard, a seventh-grader at Tomball Junior High School in Tomball, Texas, has been harassed by a group of white students who bullied him because he is black, according to his mother, Tahiyyah Howard.

"I'm just, really, you know, sick of it," Howard told ABC News affiliate KTRK-TV. "A girl wrote on the board 'Black Justin' and my son was really upset."

The most egregious example, the boy's mother said, came when Justin received a fake birthday party invitation from two classmates with a Ku Klux Klan theme. It is unclear about how the boy became aware of the note.

"[They] put it on his desk and said that he was invited to a KKK birthday party with lots of fun and games," said Howard, who has not sought action outside the school.

Man slaps crying baby on Delta flight, uses racial slurs, gets arrested

Monday, February 18th, 2013

(Examiner.com) A man slapped a crying baby on board an Atlanta-bound Delta flight according to a Feb. 16 report on Christian Post.

The flight departed from Minneapolis on Feb. 8 and as it neared its destination, the baby began crying. Joe Rickey Hundley of Idaho, also on the flight, was annoyed by the crying and screamed at the child’s mother using racial slurs and then slapped the baby in the face.

The child’s mother, Jessica Bennett, 33, described the brutal and sudden attack saying the slap was hard enough to leave a scratch under the child’s right eye.

According to the police report, Hundley shouted, "Shut that (n-word) baby up!" as he slapped the baby boy. Witnesses to the incident said the slap had the opposite of the attacker’s desired effect and caused the child to cry with more intensity.

Reputed Latino gang members indicted in attack on black youths

Wednesday, February 13th, 2013

(Los Angeles Times) Two reputed Latino gang members are facing federal hate crime charges for allegedly carrying out racially motivated attacks on four black youngsters as part of a wider campaign of terror aimed at forcing African Americans out of a west Compton neighborhood, the U.S. attorney said Friday.

Jeffrey Aguilar, 19, and Efren Marquez, 21, were indicted Thursday by a grand jury on five felony civil rights charges in connection with a series of incidents that began New Year's Eve. Authorities allege they beat a young black man with a pipe and then turned their threats and racial epithets toward members of a black household where he fled. They pleaded not guilty in a downtown L.A. courtroom Friday.

"No one should have to look over their shoulder in fear because of who they are," said U.S. Atty. Andre Birotte, who announced the charges. "Hate-fueled crimes have no place in our society."

Asian-Americans outraged at ‘light’ sentence for hazing-death of soldier

Thursday, November 29th, 2012

(Examiner.com) Asian-American civil-rights organizations have decried the "light" sentence imposed on a U.S. Army sergeant convicted of hazingthat led to the death of an Asian-Americansoldier.

OCA and the Asian American Justice Center on Wednesday, Nov. 28, issued a statement calling the reprimand and demotion of rank for Staff Sgt. Andrew Van Bockel "shocking" and a "disgrace" to our military's values.

Following a court martial, Van Bockel was found guilty of hazing, three charges of dereliction of duty and two charges of maltreatment, in the death of Pvt. Danny Chen, who killed himself in Oct.2011 in Afghanistan following weeks of bullying and abuse.

In the trial, prosecutors successfully proved that the abuse and maltreatment directly led to Chen, a 19-year-old raised in New York's Chinatown, taking his own life.

Friday, November 9th, 2012

(The Blaze) Tempers flared in the wake of last night’s presidential election on the campus of the University of Mississippi. A protest at the college against the re-election of President Barack Obama grew into a crowd of about 400 students who shouted racial slurs as rumors of a riot spread on social media.

In the end, two arrests were reported, although university officials say there were no injuries or property damage Tuesday night. According to Salon.com, “Reports conflict over whether rocks were thrown, but Twitter images testify that an “Obama Biden” campaign sign was burned.”

Louisiana woman, 20, set on fire in possible hate crime attack

Tuesday, October 23rd, 2012

(New York Daily News) A 20-year-old black woman said she was set on fire by three men who wrote the initials KKK and a racial slur on her car in northeastern Louisiana, police said Monday.

Officers found Sharmeka Moffitt with burns on more than half of her body when they responded to her emergency call Sunday night, said Louisiana State Police spokeswoman Lt. Julie Lewis.

The FBI is investigating the attack as a possible hate crime, but no arrests had been made as of late Monday, Lewis said. She said Moffitt was in critical condition at a hospital and that some of her injuries were third-degree burns.

She is expected to have surgery Tuesday.

Moffitt told police the men doused her in a flammable liquid and set her on fire at a park in Winnsboro, a town in Franklin Parish. Lewis said she extinguished the fire using water from a spigot before a police officer arrived.
