Diversity in newsrooms stagnates

Sunday, July 14th, 2013

(Politico) The Atlantic's Riva Gold looks at recent data from the American Society of News Editors showing stagnation in the rise of minorities in America's newsrooms:

At a time when non-whites make up roughly 37 percent of the U.S. population, the percentage of minorities in the newsroom has fallen to 12.37 percent from its 13.73 percent high in 2006. In last year's 2012 ASNE study, overall newsroom employment was down 2.4 percent, but the picture looked much worse – down 5.7 percent – for minorities.

This means that fewer minorities are getting the opportunity to work in news, and news organizations are losing their ability to empower , represent, –and especially in cases where language ability is crucial, even to report on minority populations in their communities."

‘Big Brother’: Contestants Fired over Racial Slurs

Wednesday, July 10th, 2013

(ExtraTV) According to TMZ, housemate GinaMarie Zimmerman has been let go from her day job at East Coast USA Pageant, Inc., after using racial slurs against other contestants on the show's live feeds.

The company told TMZ, "We have never known this side of GinaMarie or have ever witnessed such acts of racism in the past. We are actually thankful that this show let us see GinaMarie for who she truly is. We would never want her to be a role model to our future contestants. In a business where we are surrounded by beauty every day we are saddened to see something so ugly come from someone we put on a very high pedestal."

Fellow housemate Aaryn Gries was reportedly dropped from her modeling agency, Zephyr Talent, after making bigoted comments about her competitors.

Since the “Big Brother” housemates have no connection to the outside world, Zimmerman and Gries do not know that they’ve lost their jobs and won’t find out until they're evicted or one is crowned the winner of the competition.

Paula Deen Accuser: This Was Never About the N-Word

Monday, July 8th, 2013

(Webpronews) Lisa Jackson, a former manager at restaurants owned by Paula Deen and her brother Bubba Hiers, has spoken through her attorneys about the racism controversy surrounding Deen. In a statement provided to CNN, White said that the attention over Deen’s use of the “n-word”, brought to light in her deposition in the civil suit brought by White, is missing the greater point of her charges.

“This lawsuit has never been about the N-word,” Jackson says in the statement. “It is to address Ms. Deen’s patterns of disrespect and degradation of people that she deems to be inferior.”

Deen has challenged White’s charges of racial discrimination and her right to bring them in a civil suit due to the fact that White herself never experienced any racial discrimination. She is white. Deen’s attorneys have referenced the principle of “standing” – that a plaintiff in a civil case must demonstrate that they were personally injured by the defendants behavior, not just witness to others’ injuries. They cite the recent SCOTUS decision to not even hear arguments relating to California’s Prop 8 appeal due to lack of standing on the part of the challengers.

Less Than Accidental Racist: Why Paula Deen’s Comments Insult Her Fans Too

Wednesday, June 26th, 2013

(Time) “I can’t, myself, determine what offends another person,” says Paula Deen in the transcript of a deposition for a workplace-discrimination lawsuit that surfaced yesterday. By today, I’m thinking, she might have a better idea.

For instance: admitting that she has used “the N word” (in her and the lawyer’s words)–”of course,” and probably on more than one occasion. Defending telling racial and ethnic jokes: “it’s just what they are, they’re jokes.” And wishing she could plan a “Southern plantation wedding” for her brother, with African American servers in the part of antebellum slaves. (Deen reportedly didn’t go through with that idea because, you know, “the media” would have twisted it into something. Those media! Always turning folks’ innocent plantation-slave parties into something racist!)

The transcript, published by the Huffington Post after initial reports in the National Enquirer, came in a discrimination and sexual-harassment lawsuit by a former employee against Deen and her brother Earl “Bubba” Hiers. The lawsuit’s specific allegations are still being litigated, but Deen’s on-the-record comments–her rationalization of racism maybe even more so than her admissions–could be even more damaging to the southern cook’s empire, built on media and butterfat.

This year’s Indianapolis 500 ‘princesses’ become the target of criticism over the fact that they are all white

Wednesday, May 22nd, 2013

(Mail Online) The all-white makeup of the 33 women chosen to be ambassadors of this year's Indianapolis 500 Festival has sparked a vitriolic debate over diversity within the racing culture.

Columnist Erika D. Smith highlighted the homogeneity of the Indy 500 'princesses' - a group that is selected from hundreds of applicants every year – in a piece for the Indianapolis Star, in which she suggests that their lack of diversity stems from an broader minority deficit among racing fans.

'As a non-native Hoosier, I couldn’t begin to hazard a guess as to why minorities seem to avoid the Indianapolis Motor Speedway like the plague,' Smith writes. 'Whatever the reason, though, it’s likely at the core of why all 33 of this year’s 500 Festival princesses are white. And it’s the reason that they are almost all white every year.'

George Lopez Reacts To GOP Rep. Gohmert’s ‘Terrorists Acting Hispanic’ Theory: ‘You Are F*cking Crazy’

Saturday, May 18th, 2013

(Mediaite) When HuffPost Live’s Jacob Soboroff hadGeorge Lopez on his show this week, he asked the comedian to give his reaction to a particularly disturbing recent clip of Rep. Louie Gohmertsuggesting that terrorist are being trained to “act Hispanic” in order to infiltrate the United States. Lopez had one, simple response: “You are fucking crazy, dude.”

Gohmert made his comments last month of C-Span’s Washington Journal. “We know Al Qaeda has camps with the drug cartels on the Mexican border,” the congressman from Texas said, and “we know that people are now being trained to come in and act like Hispanic, when they are radical Islamists.”

A distraught Lopez sighed and said, “Louie Gohmert, you’re fucking crazy, dude. You’re crazy, man.” To explain what Gohmert may have been thinking, Lopez said the idea that “acting Latino” would make it easier for a terrorist to enter the country is “ridiculous.”

Jason Richwine Resigns From Heritage Foundation After Dissertation Controversy

Wednesday, May 15th, 2013

(Huffington Post) Jason Richwine, the co-author of aHeritage Foundation report on immigration who came under fire this week for arguing in his Harvard dissertation that Hispanic immigrants to the U.S. have substantially lower IQs than whites, resigned Friday.

"Jason Richwine let us know he’s decided to resign from his position. He’s no longer employed by Heritage," spokesman Daniel Woltornist said in an email to HuffPost. "It is our long-standing policy not to discuss internal personnel matters."

The news was first reported by Slate's Dave Weigel.

The report put the cost of immigration reform at a whopping $6.3 trillion. Though Heritage's 2007 report was one of the reasons an earlier immigration bill failed, the 2013 report was widely mockedeven by Republicans the foundation hoped would support it.

Harvard accepted Richwine's 2009 dissertation for a doctorate in public policy. In it, he spoke of the "growing Hispanic underclass."

‘Seeking Asian Female’ Film Exposes Men With ‘Yellow Fever’

Saturday, May 11th, 2013

(ABC News) All her life Debbie Lum, a second-generation Chinese-American filmmaker, has been hounded by men with "yellow fever" — usually, but not always, white men with a fetish for Asian women.

So she set out to expose the men who only see the stereotypical domestic, submissive and highly sexual creature, and not the person.

In her first feature-length film, "Seeking Asian Female," which airs tonight at 10 p.m. ET on PBS's "Independent Lens," Lum gets drawn into the complicated relationship of a 60-year-old white man and his 30-year-old mail-order bride.

Lum told ABCNews.com that she found the perfect subject after searching for men with yellow fever on Craig's list and other websites. Steven, a twice-divorced garage attendant at the San Francisco Airport, has been unabashedly trolling the website Asian Asia Friend Finder for five years looking for a Chinese bride.

Eva Longoria’s Devious Maids Is a Wasted Opportunity

Sunday, May 5th, 2013

(Huffington Post) Holy stereotypes, Batman! Have you seen the teaser trailer for Eva Longoria's new Lifetime series,Devious Maids?

The minute-long trailer manages to efficiently portray Latinas as hypersexual, nosy, scheming and, at times, totally invisible domestic servants, one set of pushed-up breasts, devilishly squinted eyes and sassy hair flip at a time. What the trailer doesn't do, however, is allude to the supposed actual premise of the show. According to MyLifetime.com, the show is supposed to center on "a close-knit group of maids who are bonded together by their jobs, life struggles and the melodramatic 'upstairs-downstairs' universe that engulfs their employers." This formula, the network promises, will paint class warfare both fun and dirty! Because, you know, class warfare has always been so very boring. Thanks, Lifetime!

That being said, Devious Maids seems to be a wasted opportunity. The series is the first mainstream, English-language television drama featuring five Latina main characters, which is — for better or for worse — a novel concept even in this day and age. Not novel, however, is the fact that all — count 'em, all! — of the main characters play "devious" maids. It just all seems like a missed opportunity to diversify the roles played by Latinas.
