Like #AffirmativeAction, Arizona Law Splits Elites and the Public. #hispanic #immigration

(Peter A. Brown, Wall Street Journal) There is a sizable disconnect between the views of many political elites who see Arizona’s new effort to identify illegal immigrants as symbolic of a mentality they abhor, and the mass of Americans who see it as a reasonable tool for police to enforce the law.

This is nothing new. A similar split appeared a generation ago over affirmative action – before Democrats, for the most part, decided they were better off not fighting Republican attempts to use the issue against them.

As the reaction to the Arizona law plays out around the country, it has the potential to become a factor in this November’s elections for both parties – potentially helping Republicans among the general population and Democrats among Hispanics. A similar pattern emerged regarding the overall electorate and black voters when it came to affirmative action.
