How do Americans decide who is a racist?

Tuesday, July 16th, 2013

(Herald Online) I am so old that I can remember when most of the people promoting race hate were white.

Apparently other Americans also recognize that the sources of racism are different today from what they were in the past. According to a recent Rasmussen poll, 31 percent of blacks think that most blacks are racists, while 24 percent of blacks think that most whites are racist.

The difference between these percentages is not great, but it is remarkable nevertheless. After all, generations of blacks fought the white racism from which they suffered for so long. If many blacks themselves now think that most other blacks are racist, that is startling.

The moral claims advanced by generations of black leaders – claims that eventually touched the conscience of the nation and turned the tide toward civil rights for all – have now been cheapened by today's generation of black “leaders,” who act as if it is all just a matter of whose ox is gored.

Even in legal cases involving terrible crimes – the O.J. Simpson murder trial or the charges of gang rape against Duke University students – many black “leaders” and their followers have not waited for facts about who was guilty and who was not, but have immediately taken sides, based on who was black and who was white.

NYPD’s Kelly Tried to ‘Instill Fear’ in Minorities: Ex-Cop

Monday, April 8th, 2013

(NEWSER) – As controversy continues over New York City's stop-and-frisk law, a state senator—and former cop—has testified in federal court that the police commissioner aimed to "instill fear" in the black and Hispanic communities. State Sen. Eric Adams, a police officer for 22 years, said that during a 2010 meeting, police commissioner Raymond Kelly "stated that he targeted … that group because he wanted to instill fear in them that every time that they left their homes they could be targeted by police," the Guardian reports. The court case has been brought by plaintiffs trying to end the stop-and-frisk practice.

(NY Daily News) He denies being slaphappy.

Jonah and his mother, Jessica Bennett, were sitting next to Hundley when she claims in court documents that the 60-year-old had been drinking and told her to, “Shut that n—-r baby up!”

Colin Powell Calls Out The GOP’s Racism Problem: There Is ‘A Dark Vein Of Intolerance’

Sunday, January 13th, 2013

(ThinkProgress) On Sunday, during an appearance on Meet The Press, Colin Powell condemned the GOP’s “dark vein of intolerance” and the party’s repeated use of racial code words to oppose President Obama and rally white conservative voters.

Without mentioning names, Powell singled out former Mitt Romney surrogate and New Hampshire Gov. John Sununu for calling Obama “lazy” and Sarah Palin, who, Powell charged, used slavery-era terms to describe Obama:

POWELL: There’s also a dark — a dark vein of intolerance in some parts of the party. What do I mean by that? I mean by that that they still sort of look down on minorities. How can I evidence that?

When I see a former governor say that the President is “shuckin’ and jivin’,” that’s racial era slave term. When I see another former governor after the president’s first debate where he didn’t do very well, says that the president was lazy. He didn’t say he was slow. He was tired. He didn’t do well. He said he was lazy. Now, it may not mean anything to most Americans, but to those of us who are African Americans, the second word is shiftless and then there’s a third word that goes along with that. The birther, the whole birther movement. Why do senior Republican leaders tolerate this kind of discussion within the party?

(CNN) – A Mississippi man pleaded guilty Thursday to a federal hate crime charge in connection with a group of young men and teenagers who carried out racial attacks against African-Americans in 2011.

Joseph Dominick, 21, from Brandon, entered a guilty plea in U.S. District Court in Jackson, Mississippi, to one count of conspiracy to commit federal hate crimes.

Dominick and others began in the spring of 2011 to harass and assault black people in Jackson and the surrounding area, according to the FBI.

Racial harassment happening more on the job than before

Sunday, December 2nd, 2012

(Examiner) A 49-year-old black woman said a recent U.S.Supreme Court case involving racial harassment is long overdue and often goes unreported by victims.

(To protect her identity only her first name will be used.)

Yolanda worked 12 years as a full-time warehouse clerk at a storage facility in Munster, Ind. where she lives today with her husband and two daughters. She was fired July 2011 for what the company said was “poor performance” but for what she described as “standing up for myself.”

After two years of alleged harassment, Yolanda said she had enough.

“It’s funny how once I complained to the human resource department about how I was being treated by a supervisor, I was suddenly fired,” she told “My supervisor was a Hispanic male and he was this macho guy who thought he was so good looking and could do whatever he wanted to people. I was hired through the unemployment office so he thought I was vulnerable and afraid, but he was wrong.”

(The Blaze) Tempers flared in the wake of last night’s presidential election on the campus of the University of Mississippi. A protest at the college against the re-election of President Barack Obama grew into a crowd of about 400 students who shouted racial slurs as rumors of a riot spread on social media.

In the end, two arrests were reported, although university officials say there were no injuries or property damage Tuesday night. According to, “Reports conflict over whether rocks were thrown, but Twitter images testify that an “Obama Biden” campaign sign was burned.”

A university spokesman says the gathering began after midnight with 30 to 40 students protesting Obama’s re-election but quickly grew. Rumors exploded on Twitter after student journalists posted a video calling the gathering a riot.

Louisiana woman, 20, set on fire in possible hate crime attack

Tuesday, October 23rd, 2012

(New York Daily News) A 20-year-old black woman said she was set on fire by three men who wrote the initials KKK and a racial slur on her car in northeastern Louisiana, police said Monday.

Officers found Sharmeka Moffitt with burns on more than half of her body when they responded to her emergency call Sunday night, said Louisiana State Police spokeswoman Lt. Julie Lewis.

The FBI is investigating the attack as a possible hate crime, but no arrests had been made as of late Monday, Lewis said. She said Moffitt was in critical condition at a hospital and that some of her injuries were third-degree burns.

She is expected to have surgery Tuesday.

Moffitt told police the men doused her in a flammable liquid and set her on fire at a park in Winnsboro, a town in Franklin Parish. Lewis said she extinguished the fire using water from a spigot before a police officer arrived.

Dozens demonstrate against immigration crackdown in Detroit

Sunday, October 21st, 2012

(Detroit Free Press) Dozens of families marched 4 miles from Clark Park to President Barack Obama's Detroit campaign office Saturday to protest what they call harassment and terror tactics by U.S. immigration officers in Latino-populated parts of southwest Detroit.

Prompted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement actions last week that included the questioning and detaining of Latino parents before and after dropping children off at local schools like Cesar Chavez Academy, the group called Saturday for Obama to curtail what they described as racial profiling.

"Cesar Chavez is a pillar of the community," said Joyce Schon, a lawyer who represents BAMN, the Coalition to Defend Affirmative Action, Integration and Immigration Rights By Any Means Necessary. "This is just wrong."

Ann Coulter And Bill Maher Duke It Out Over Racism, Obama, And Romney Flip-Flopping

Monday, October 15th, 2012

(Mediaite) Ann Coulter sat down with Bill Maher tonight for a lengthy conversation that touched on everything from racism in America to how much Mitt Romneyflip-flops. Coulter contended that “real racism,” for the most part, no longer exists in the United States. Maher challenged her on how she could think that actual racism is gone and has been replaced by liberal racial demagoguery.

Coulter mockingly asked where all the racists are that liberals keep talking about. Maher brought up a 2008 poll finding in one swing state that a surprising number of Americans are not ready for a black president, and asked Coulter how she could possibly believe that racism is mostly gone. She pointed to polls that found many Americans are not ready for a Mormon president either.
