(National Journal) Racial, Socioeconomic Segregation Still Rampant in Schools: Despite a younger generation that’s becoming increasingly diverse, our nation’s schools are still woefully segregated: White students remain  concentrated in schools with other whites while blacks and Latinos are often isolated in their own schools, according to a study as reported on by the New York Times. Black or Latino students are twice as likely as white or Asian students to attend schools where its majority are poor children, the study shows.

Black Male Graduation Rate Still Lags Behind Others: The majority of young black men who earned their high school diplomas did so in four years, a major improvement for this racial cohort yet their numbers still lagged behind their white counterparts, according to a report cited by USA Today. The report found that 52 percent of male black students graduated from high school in four years, compared to 58 percent of Hispanic males and 78 percent of white, non-Hispanics.

The future needs of special education students may be in jeopardy

( Many African American students are placed in special education programs because they are believed to have learning disabilities.

Once Water Gill wrote, “The plight of African-American males is a growing concern for many educators, parents, and human service professionals.”

In 2009-2010, the Oakland Unified School District placed 2,354 African-American students in special education programs, and in 2010-2011, 2, 337 African American children were placed in special education programs (

High Cost of Ignoring Minority Students

(The Root) Recent census data reveal that, for the first time, racial and ethnic minorities make up more than half of all children born in the United States, with 50.4 percent of children under age 1 identified as Hispanic, black, Asian American or members of another ethnic minority group.

In terms of the overall population, African Americans are the second-largest minority group in the nation (after Hispanics), with a 1.6 percent increase between 2010 and 2011. Minorities now make up nearly 37 percent of the overall U.S. population, and it's predicted that by 2042, a minority of Americans will be non-Hispanic whites.

Oakland Schools Report Shows Black Male Students At High Risk Of Dropping Out

(Huffington Post) High rates of chronic absence, suspension and poor academic performance signal that more than half of African American male students in the Oakland Unified School District are at risk of dropping out, according to new research.

The Urban Strategies Council, an Oakland-based community advocacy organization, found significant disparities between African American boys and their peers: Fifty-five percent of black boys in the 2010-11 school year were falling off course from graduation or were at risk of doing so, compared with 37.5 percent of students overall in the district.

From kindergarten through 12th grade, researchers found that black boys struggled with regular attendance and suspensions and scoring proficiently on standardized tests or maintaining grades above a C average – warning signs that they might drop out.

Report sounds warning on Latino education gap

(AZ Central) A new report says Arizona hasn't made much progress in closing the educational-achievement gap for Latinos in the past decade, and it predicts dire consequences to the state's economy if nothing changes.

Despite various efforts to improve education, Latinos in Arizona score lower on state standardized tests than White students, have higher dropout rates and are less likely to get a bachelor's degree, according to a report released Friday by Arizona State University's Morrison Institute for Public Policy.

One example of how the educational-achievement gap has changed little in the past 10 years: The percentage of Latinos ages 25 to 34 who had a bachelor's degree or higher increased only 1 percentage point to a total of 9 percent, compared with 32 percent for Whites.

America needs more black and Hispanic male teachers

(Washington Post) The statistics have almost become cliché: Black elementary and high school students score lower on standardized tests, on average, than their white or Asian counterparts. For years, educators have searched for solutions. For Kwame Griffith, a senior vice president at Teach For America, the way to help narrow this achievement gap is by recruiting more black and Hispanic male teachers.


“Every leader that commits to this work can have a massive impact on their kids, regardless of background,” said Griffith, who has worked at the education corps for 10 years. “But I’ve also seen how a corps member of color can be a role model for his/her students that has a profound impact beyond being an excellent teacher.”

Griffith, 32, said that seeing more black male teachers can inspire students in and outside the classroom.

In Washington area, African American students suspended and expelled two to five times as often as whites

(Washington Post) Across the Washington area, black students are suspended and expelled two to five times as often as white students, creating disparities in discipline that experts say reflect a growing national problem.

An analysis by The Washington Post shows the phenomenon both in the suburbs and in the city, from the far reaches of Southern Maryland to the subdivisions of Fairfax, Prince George’s and Montgomery counties.

Last year, for example, one in seven black students in St. Mary’s County were suspended from school, compared with one in 20 white students. In Alexandria, black students were nearly six times as likely to be suspended as their white peers.

In New Book Decrying ‘Slow Death’ Of White America, Pat Buchanan Warns That Minorities Lower Test Scores

(Think Progress) Pat Buchanan is, among other things, an MSNBC contributor with a new book out, Suicide of a Superpower: Will America Survive to 2025? As his “last political will and testament,” the book’s thesis is centered on “cultural collapse” of the nation and “the slow death of the people who created and ruled the nation” — namely, white people. In an op-ed for CNS News yesterday, Buchanan outlines the three major consequences America will face without enough white people to save it.

First, the Republican party, which “routinely gets 90 percent of its presidential votes from white America,” will come to an end, especially since crucial GOP states like Texas are “hispanicizing.” Second, the “millions of immigrants, legal and illegal” who “do not bring the academic or professional skills of European-Americans” will replace actual “taxpayers” and suck the government dry. Finally, test-scores will nose-dive because “more and more children taking those tests will be African-American and Hispanic”:

Spanish Language Scholar Leads Development Of Digital Tools To Teach Hispanic History

(Huffington Post) If Latinos don't understand the roots of their culture, how can they preserve it? Although the explanation might sound a bit more academic at times, that concern is driving scholars at the Dominican Studies Institute of the City College of New York to develop new digital technology for studying Spanish writings from the Americas' colonial era.

Their prototype is called the Spanish Paleography Digital Teaching and Learning Tool.

"It is a tool that will revolutionize the history and contribute to the strengthening of Hispanic cultural identity in the United States," said Ramona Hernandez, director of the institute. She said the online program will facilitate the study of four centuries of written Spanish, beginning with the arrival of Christopher Columbus in the New World and continuing through the formation of Hispanic society and "the founding of the countries we know as the Americas."

California School District Racial Profiled Latino Students, ACLU Says

(FoxNews Latino) The American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California is suing a school district and law enforcement authorities for allegedly racially profiling 55 Hispanic students.

The ACLU says Glendale Unified School District illegally detained and searched the students, who were rounded up and help for an hour in September 2010. The Los Angeles police departments and Los Angeles County Probation Department were also named in the lawsuit.
