The color of your skin shouldn’t influence the terms of your mortgage loan.

But federal mortgage data indicate race is a factor.

Black and Latino mortgage loan borrowers are more than twice as likely as white borrowers to be granted high-interest-rate loans in Monmouth and Ocean counties, and in New Jersey.

Income doesn’t seem to matter. Black and Latino borrowers still are two to three times as likely as whites to get “subprime” loans. This is true for all income levels, even for those earning more than $126,000 a year.
