‘Its OK to say coloured people’: Glenn Beck risks race row by attacking use of ‘African American’

Thursday, September 1st, 2011

(Mail Online) ight-wing radio host Glenn Beck has attacked the term 'African American' saying there is nothing wrong with using 'coloured' or 'black' instead.

The controversial broadcaster made the comments as he spoke about his recent 'Restoring Courage' rally in Jerusalem.

Turning to his co-host Pat Pat Gray, beck said: 'Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't you feel ridiculously stupid everywhere in Africa, in Europe, in South America, in Jerusalem when you would say the words African American.

'Now how can people be one thing in one country and nowhere else in the world.'

When his co-host asked what the correct term was, Beck replied: 'It's black,' before repeating 'black' three times.

Conservative Media Go Ballistic Over Holder’s Civil Rights Lesson

Thursday, March 3rd, 2011

(Media Matters) The right-wing media have repeatedly mischaracterized Attorney General Eric Holder’s recent reference to “my people” to claim that he is a “black nationalist” or that the Obama Justice Department is motivated by “racial bias.” In his statement, Holder actually took issue with the suggestion that a 2008 incident involving the New Black Panther Party was a more “blatant form of voter intimidation” than what occurred in the 1960s; Holder said the suggestion “does a great disservice to people who put their lives on the line, who risked all.”

Holder: Statement “Does A Great Disservice To People Who Put Their Lives On The Line, Who Risked All For My People, My Wife’s Sister.” During a congressional hearing on funding for DOJ’s Civil Rights Division, Rep. John Culberson (R-TX) repeatedly questioned Holder on the New Black Panthers case, alleging that the “case reveals a pattern in the department of refusing to enforce the law if white voters are being harassed.” Culberson also read sworn testimony about the case from former Democratic activist Bartle Bull, saying that, according to Bull, the incident “would qualify as the most blatant form of voter intimidation I have encountered in my life in political campaigns in many states, even going back to the work I did in Mississippi in the 1960s.” Holder replied:

Overwhelmingly #White #Media Criticize Conservative Rallies as ‘Overwhelmingly White’. Where’s the #diversity?

Tuesday, August 31st, 2010

(NewsBusters) If you thought media coverage of the Aug. 28 “Restoring Honor” rally hosted in Washington D.C. by Fox News host Glenn Beck seemed like just another attack on conservatives, you’re not alone. As noted by the Daily Caller’s Jim Treacher, much of the coverage had a common thread: describing the crowd as “overwhelmingly white.”

While the term was certainly used in coverage of Beck’s rally, it’s not a new label. “Overwhelmingly white” is a prime example of the media’s groupthink on Beck, Tea Parties, and the conservative movement in general. Virtually every major “mainstream” media outlet has used the phrase in just the past year to describe conservative events.

But even as the media criticize Tea Party and other conservative rallies for an apparent lack of diversity, they struggle to bring minority voices into their own operations.

All three broadcast networks have described the Tea Parties as “overwhelmingly white.” So have CNN, MSNBC, NPR, the Agence France Presse, The Washington Post, The New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, USA Today, National Journal and US News & World Report. Many of those organizations are the very ones the news industry discusses as having failed to make diversity goals for staff.

Glenn Beck takes back ‘Obama is #racist’ charge – now questions his theology. Don’t we just need him to be President?

Monday, August 30th, 2010

(FoxNews) Radio and TV host Glenn Beck said Sunday he doesn’t want to retract his controversial charge last year that President Obama is racist, but does want to amend it since reading more about “liberation theology.”

“I have a big fat mouth sometimes and I say things, and that’s not the way people should behave,” Beck said, adding that he regrets saying a year ago that Obama has a “deep-seated hatred for white people” because it’s not accurate.

“I didn’t understand, really, his theology,” Beck a Fox News host, told “Fox News Sunday.” “I think that it is much more of a theological question that he is a guy who understands the world through liberation theology, which is oppressor and victim.”

Beck described liberation theology, which teaches that salvation for the individual is dependent on salvation for the collective through economic and social justice, as the message that was preached by Obama’s ex-pastor, Rev. Jeremiah Wright.

Glenn Beck’s plans for rally on a hallowed date and spot spurs countermarches. #civilrights

Tuesday, August 17th, 2010

(Washington Post) Social activists and civil rights leaders, among them the Rev. Al Sharpton, are planning marches and demonstrations — including the unveiling of a nearly four-story-tall original sculpture on the Mall — on Aug. 28 to coincide with a rally organized by Fox News personality Glenn Beck.

Beck’s “Restoring Honor” rally, with former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin among the scheduled speakers, will take place on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, 47 years to the day after Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech there.

The conservative talk show host announced in November that he wanted to reveal a “100 year plan for America” at the Lincoln Memorial. More recently, he said that the purpose of his Aug. 28 event is to restore the country’s “values” and to pay tribute to military families.
